Who to call to fix lock on iron gate below stoop?
All of a sudden we’ve been having problems locking our iron gate under the stoop. I thought it was the cold weather, but it’s continued on even on warm days. The problem isn’t the lock itself but rather the deadbolt going into the metal pocket that houses it (not just a strike plate). Do I need to call an ironworker? Do they handle these? Also I don’t know why it would all of a sudden stop working. It doesn’t seem to have changed in any way, and no one’s hit it or anything. Thanks.

This project is often tricky because it’s not clear whether a locksmith or an iron worker is the right trade for the job. I recently had the skeleton key lock on my old under stoop iron gate replaced with a modern deadbolt. I first called a locksmith, but they said they couldn’t do the job. I then called Vinnie’s Iron Works (http://vinniesironworks.com/) and they did the job for me. Price was very reasonable and included replacing a portion of the gate that had broken off. I’m sure they could handle your problem.

“sleeve thing — the sleeve thing is an iron thingie” aha, got it. lol. sort of. so its the frame that goes around the door? assuming you are one of seven humans on earth without a smartphone that has a camera, i’d say despite this being metal instead of wood that a handyman with a grinder or drill should be able to figure it out. a halfway decent one that is. problem is that locksmith and ironworker may charge $$ for a simple thing when it sounds like a 1/8 mm needs to be shaved off.

The long extreme cold spell has thrown many outside elements out of whack. Sometimes they do realign as the spring and summer heat return, then you have a loose situation. Try some WD 40 and wait for spring proper. Or yes, it is an Iron person that you need. A difficult trade to get for a small job!

Thanks for the info. It’s not the lock part — it’s where the deadbolt fits into the sleeve thing — the sleeve thing is an iron thingie that would have to be adjusted by an ironworker, I think. It’s welded to the frame, also.

A little confused. However it is timely as i just had to replace a spring loaded latch on my door. I don’t know if you are describing a true standalone deadbolt, a handle that turns with a spring loaded latch, or an “all-in-one” mortise lock. While ironworkers tend to install locks in their doors and they are familiar with installation or operation thereof – if you take apart the lock (or know how to do so – youtube helps) you can figure out if it is the lock. In that case you can take it into a locksmith to replace the part needed. I paid a couple bucks for a new spring loaded latch – i shudder to think about how much if a had to call someone out.
