water bill?

Agree $800 sounds unusually high. We also pay about $250-$350 a quarter. We have a two-family with five occupants and two washing machines.

Our water bill for a douple duplex (two families) is fairly consistently over $800 for a three month period. Is this a leak? Has been this way for some time (fixed any leaks or running toilets we thought we had). We’ll get $300 for one period and then back to over $800 again. Any suggestions?

I would log into your NYC DEP account and there you will find fantastic water usage graphs that can answer when and how much water you are using. By the month, week, day, or hour. As for leaks that’s pretty simple to determine. Go to the basement and look at your meter where you will see a tiny red arrow, if it’s spinning you are using water, if it’s motionless than no water is being used. Any leaks before the meter will not show up as billable usage.

It all depends on how many people and how much water appliances use. My bill for a double duplex with 2 adults and 2 kids in each duplex is under $300 a quarter. Usage before I moved in was double that. Not sure what it was but there wasn’t a leak. We did replace and old washer and dishwasher but it seems unlikely that those were the only culprits.

Sounds way high to me: mine w/ 2 families of 2 adults each is less than $300 a quarter. Do as Townie suggests & if you have cutoffs, turn everything off & then open one at a time. The periodic change might make the problem more obvious too if you look on the DEP site.

Yes, we have a 2-fam (adults and kids in both units), and we pay roughly $300/qtr. $800/qtr sounds way off.

Yes forgot to mention two family four adults, three kids, year total under $1,900. Do you have a meter? Maybe it’s being estimated.

If you have tenants, sometimes you have to remind them that although they do not get separate bill for water, it is metered and that you pay the bill! I once had a tenant that every Saturday and Sunday in the Spring and early Summer months would invite many friends, sometimes 6-7 at a time to play tennis in Fort Greene Park; just across the street. They would then all have showers, do a load of laundry each before going out to dinner or a show at BAM! The joys of living in Fort Greene!
