Triple pane window sound insulating ( from passing helcopters )
We solved both our noise and our draft problem with “Indow Windows.” I don’t want to be too redundant, so here’s a link to the Yelp review I posted about them last year: [http://www.yelp.com/biz/indow-windows-portland?hrid=kv1n-reEaa4oqCOmRMwroA](http://www.yelp.com/biz/indow-windows-portland?hrid=kv1n-reEaa4oqCOmRMwroA) and here’s a link to a case study Indow put on their own blog about us: [http://www.indowwindows.com/blog/case-studies/slaying-noise-and-drafts-in-new-york-city/](http://www.indowwindows.com/blog/case-studies/slaying-noise-and-drafts-in-new-york-city/) I’ve posted about them a few times here on Brownstoner as well. If you’re looking for a reasonably priced way to curtail the noise, whatever your window situation, I highly recommend Indow Window inserts. I’m not affiliated with them in any way other than as a very satisfied customer.

We have a problem with hundreds of tour helicopters flying up and down the Hudson that our Mayor will not stop.. Has anyone had a similar problem and have triple pane windows reduced the noise? Thanks, G

Helicopters flying up and down the Hudson! How do you think it feels and sounds to have them flying over your head if you do not live in Manhattan where there is a no fly zone. Commuters flying from JFK to downtown heliports or Hamptons weekenders avoiding the traffic and don’t even get me started about the Police maneuvers with their toys hovering and circling doing “practice runs” at all hours of the night! (Sorry all the above was not your question or problem) Yes, “City Windows”; google them, do make a huge difference to noise, but not the vibrations of helicopters hovering over head!

I’ve had triple pane windows for years; they reduce sound levels a good deal, but don’t help all that much with aircraft, car alarms, construction noise, etc.

I had a client in Brooklyn Heights adjacent to the Brooklyn Queens Expressway and we used the citi windows in addition to special Duratherm acoustic windows. The windows units were doubled paned with one layer of regular glass and another of thicker laminated glass. Because the layers are different thicknesses they vibrate at different frequencies and are less likely to transmit sound. The windows worked well and reduced the road noise, but it was the additional layer of citi windows on the inside that eliminated all the noise. I recommend that over triple pane windows which will only be a small increment better than double paned windows.

Triple pane windows are for weather insulation, not sound. The key to deadening sound, particularly bass-like sounds (including helicopters), is isolating the vibration. Noise reduction windows, of the sort joearchitect references, use a pane of laminated glass the reduce the vibration, with some gas separating a thinner interior panel. These also have the benefit of being safer — the laminated glass does not shatter and is rather difficult to penetrate. Creating even larger dead space between the windows to isolate vibrations — ie, using city windows and the like — will always dramatically improve noise control.

ask contractor for specific sound proof window estimate based on size style and color pricing varies on that… www.rivacontracting.net
