Street Tree Planting

The City is taking down the >100 year old Norway maple in front of our house as I write. I just filed an on line request for a replacement, but I was wondering if anyone knows of a private company that can apply for a permit and plant a street tree and how much this might cost. I’m fairly old and would rather not wait the number of years that the City takes to plant a replacement, IF I can afford to have the work done privately.

“Our” tree was planted today, through the NY Tree Trust. I was really impressed that they were able to accomplish this in the same season in which the old tree was taken down. I’ll write a longer post with today’s date.

$1.800, in my case. I’m not sure if that varies with the condition of the tree pit and whether or not the Parks Dept. might have already ground the stump (which hasn’t been done in front of my house). Stump-grinding added considerably to the estimate from the private tree service.

We just had a visit from James Kaechele, who runs the NY Tree Trust – a program of City Parks Foundation and the NYC Parks Dept. They’ll be able to plant a tree this season, possibly next week and we’ve decided to go with them. Thank you very much Arcady for giving me James’ contact information. Someone from Urban Arborists, in Red Hook also looked at the tree. They were equally impressive and their cost was of the same order of magnitude as the donation the Tree Trust requires. The biggest deciding factor in favor of the latter is speed. The private company might not have been able to get a permit to plant this Fall. In the overall scheme of things waiting for the spring would have been OK to, but I tend to be impatient.Both sources would let us specify what kind of tree we wanted. We’ve opted for a honey locust. I’ll report back when the tree is planted.

Thank you handyrenny, but I fear that getting a permit on my own might take as long as waiting for the City to plant the tree. I realize that it MIGHT be possible to plant a tree without a permit, but my having already requested a tree on line would probably raise red flags. I’d hate to plant an “illegal” tree and have the City take it down a year or two later.

Hello Bob, I have heard good things about Urban Arborist as well, and depending on the condition of your tree wells, the budget might be $800-$1,200 to get a new tree this fall. i don’t think it’s reasonable as a DIY project, as the street trees have a minimum size requirement, and can easily weigh 250-300lbs with the root ball. That said, with a bit of patience and cunning, the city will do it for you. Instead of calling 311, put a request through the Parks website: http://www.nycgovparks.org/services/forestry/request and follow through with your local community board Parks person (or Eric Adams’ office, he’s been everywhere lately, and clearly cares about community building.)

I’ve used Urban Arborists and Arborpolitan, and both did good work, but I’d suggest Arborpolitan first.

Call Eric Adams’ office – when Marty Markowitz was BP, we called him after submitting our request to Parks and got the whole process done in about 3 months. Including digging a pit, getting a tree, and getting a nice new tree pit guard!! As you only need one of these three things, your request may be addressed even more quickly.

A few years ago Parks created a tree pit in front of my store and planted a dead tree. Then my tenants planted a healthy crab apple tree, which tree stayed in place for about 1.5 years. Then a Parks contractor came around and yanked up the tenant’s tree and broke a couple of squares of 130+ year old bluestone sidewalk with the weight of their Bobcat and planted another dead tree. Finally they came back again and planted a slightly larger crab apple.

Not a bad idea transworld, but, since a street tree is VERY visible, I think I should have the work done legally, with a permit and everything.
