Street Tree info

The city sent someone to mark utilities on the sidewalks of our block last summer and as of today, nothing has happened nor does it seem likely to anytime soon. All the paint marks look awful.

Our street tree died a few years ago. The city came yesterday to grind down the stump. Utilities have been marked and they are very close to the old tree pit. We need to re-do the bluestone sidewalk and had plans to do that in the next few weeks but I want to avoid having the city cut up the nice new stone. I’ve called 311 and sent in an email request for info. Wondering if anyone out there knows how far away from the utilities new trees are being planted. Or is anyone planted their own tree with permits, did the permit mention the distance needed? If the city moves the tree pit over, it will be right in front of my stoop stairs–can they do that? Or do they try to fill in the street so that the trees are evenly spaced?

I thought I posted here about how foodbank drove a truck into the tree in henry street but search cant find it. anyway short version is; dragonetti widened our pit and planted tree, lopopollo iron works built the tree guard. the pit needed to be widened because of new “standards” for pits, go and search on nycparks for the pdf has all the details and specifications. be aware the quotes for this work were all over the place, we’re happy with what we ended up with but still pissy about how sl benfica tried to shirk their responsibility.

Thanks for the info on the pdf, that’s been very helpful. Is your tree pit 10ft wide, and is your tree in the center of the tree pit? Based on the bare minimums, the spot for the tree would be just shy of the front of my stoop, but the tree pit would extend in front of it. I think I’m going to have to wait to work on the sidewalk.

there are different sizes on the pdf, the minimum isn’t 10′ I’d suggest contacting parks and asking how long its going to take now the stump is done…..could be a few years from what I understand.
