There is a bad smell — mold? a dead animal? — coming from the closet in our garden apartment. That area of the apartment lies above the furnace in the basement. We have taken apart the floorboards, and looked as far as possible in the basement. We cut a hole in the wall. And pulled apart the insulation in the furnace. We cannot see a dead animal, or anything indicating the source of the smell. We don’t even know whom to call about this problem. Any suggestions would greatly help.

Check for carbon monoxide. Don’t rely on the NYC required household detector, the limit of acceptable level is too high. Get a professional meter, which will give you an accurate reading of the highest level reached over a few hours or days. Deploy it in your furnace room, in your closet, other locations. Provide the results to any of the licensed heating specialists who write in this forum. By the way, I have two meters. I would gladly sell you one for what I paid. Probably NOT carbon monoxide because: a. CO is odorless b. you’re still alive That’s not to say a good CO detector isn’t important, as well as a spill switch on the furnace.

If it’s a dead animal (a distinct foul smell as opposed to a hydrocarbon-like smell) it’s somewhere in the walls and will be gone in another week or two through either dessication or maggots (which will turn into a swarm of flies).

The smell isn’t constant. It gets worse when the furnace is on. Our tenant thought it smelled like mold. I think it smells like a dead animal. But it’s sort of putrid.

Could the horrible putrid smell kind of smell like mushrooms, if you think about it? If so, it’s mold. What kind of heat do you have? Could there be a mold issue with forced air, or a small leak somewhere with hot water or steam?

I’m glad you found it, for peace of mind. They do seem to come inside when it gets cold outside. Now you will know what a dead animal smells like. If it happens again, you may wait for it to go away, not break up the walls. Bob, and others: Elevated CO levels, which are below detection in our required devices makes us sick and stupid, but probably won’t kill us. If our detectors alerted us of low levels of CO as frequently as they actually occur, we would disable them as a nuisance; we would not be alarmed if ever we had a life-threatening level. Its one of those dangers which come from a false sense of security. We should check for CO when the client (Brickmortar) reports an unusual odor associated with a furnace. The smell is not CO, but the danger is real. Testing is easy. If negative, and the furnace is regularly serviced, it’s probably a dead animal. A professional detector costs about $150\.
