Soil test

We are building a deck and have been asked to do a soil test (boring test for TR4) Can anybody recommend an engineer who is reasonable? Thanks.

What does the test determine? Stability, contaminates? It’s probably a good bet that the soil, 3 ft down, is the same soil that the house was built upon. If the soil can support the house, I am sure there is a minimum size footing that could be calculated to sufficiently support a deck and all the different load variables. But then again, the government does need to protect the people from themselves 😉

Not new, just relatively newly enforced. Architects used to be able to sign off on the TR4’s but that’s changed, so we need the engineers. It’s required for anything that requires a foundation or footing. Ridiculous? Welcome to the New Brooklyn, dibs!

Why would one need a soil test for a deck? Is this some new DOB regulation??? Sounds ridiculous to me.

We typically use A-1 Testing out of Staten Island. I don’t know what AAA charges, but these guys are usually $1250\. I’d be curious to see how that compares to AAA.
