Smoke alarms in bedrooms?

Yup, all alarms within the unit now need to be interconnected and hard wired.

I’m currently renovating my two bedroom pre-war apartment, and have been told by my architect that I need interconnected and hardwired smoke alarms in each of the bedrooms, as well as outside the bedrooms. My electrician disagrees and insists I only need one smoke/CO alarm in the hallway. Who is right? Thank you!

Your architect is right. Under 2008 building code you need smoke/carbon monoxide alarms both inside and outside the bedrooms. jcarch ———————— James Cleary Architecture brownstoner.staging.wpengine.com/jamescleary

Yes, it is required. One inside every sleeping area and outside within 15′ of each door to said sleeping area.

Admittedly I’m splitting hairs here, but you do not want “interconnected” smoke detectors. Interconnected means that when one goes off they all do, throughout the whole residence. Otherwise, yes, hardwired inside each bedroom and outside within 15′ of the bedroom door.

Hmm… I was told that per the Building Code 907.2.10.3, all alarms within the dwelling unit need to be interconnected. Thanks for the reply!
