Seeking recommendations for thermostat for steam heat

First of all, the Darth Vader breathing is normal when your system is on. It basically just means that your radiator is coming to life. Although you haven’t physically turned your system on yet, it may have already been set by the previous owner (or your contractor) to come on when the inside temperature of your home hit a certain point, and then the weather just triggered it. On the thermostat, you want to get one that has a good name brand, one that you know will not likely fail you. We got a Honeywell a few years back. It was a model RTHL2510C and it has worked well for us. It cost around $50 at Home Depot. (I am sure that in the past two years Honeywell’s developed more whistles and bells for their thermostats.) Most important to us, and the reason we selected this thermostat, is the fact that it is programmable for 7 days and you can also set up to 4 program periods each day. The programmable thing helps so that the house is warming up before you are even waking and it is doing the same before you are arriving home after work, &c. Also, if you have tenants and need to set the thermostat to comform to city regs – it does that job well.

Hello, We are getting ready for our first winter in our new (old) house. It is steam heat (gas). We have an old Honeywell thermostat that we would like to update. We would appreciate all suggestions. Also, we haven’t turned on the heat yet, and we are noticing sounds coming through the radiators sometimes (my son describes the sounds like darth vader breathing). Any ideas what this could be? Thanks!
