Security/locks
How can we attain the greatest amount of security? Should we use an old style mortis lock without an additional deadbolt or should we just use a deadbolt? Thanks, Debra

of course deadbolt with reinforced heavy duty strike plates are the most secure. Mortise locks hollow out the door significantly and weaken the structure – but are certainly convenient fi you get the kind that requires only 1 key. Conventional pin lock tumblers (most brands sold at box box stores) are at risk for easy bumping. In any event – most locks can be picked or bumped by real pros – but they are usually going for high end targets and not residential (unless you have some original matisse paintings on your walls – ha!). And even though some can be picked does not mean it is easy on the higher end ones, and time is risk to a burglar and they will prob move onto an easier target. So higher end deadbolts that are either not pin locks or have other defeats built in are usually sufficient. Think BiLock, Medeco M3 – or if you are really going for the gold standard then look at Evva MCS or the Abloy Protec, Note that the door and jam itself most also need to se insured that they are not the weakest link – so two inch screws in a beefy strike plate is also necessary to avoid getting kicked / battered in. The mainstream brands usually seem to go cheap on the door hardware.

Obviously both the mortise with the deadbolt will give you the optimal. We often use a dummy handle on the bottom with a high security deadbolt such as medeco. Steve
