sealing hatch area
Dear Brownstoners – we are having water issues in our cellar, we think because there is a great deal of water coming in from the hatch. we have tried everywhich way to seal it properly and are now at a point where we just want to remove it and seal it over with concrete. can you recommend anyone who could do this work? Thank you!

It is a mistake to concrete over the hatch area, and it may even be a building violation to do so. You need ventilation for the cellar and of course you do need access to change major plumbing components etc. Check that you have the concrete outside pitching away from the property and the hatch is set slightly higher and is at a slight slope running away from the house.

Try putting a tarp over it & then soak it to see if it’s really the hatch. I had the same problem but discovered it was the masonry around the hatch, not the hatch itself. Put an ‘apron’ of new cement around the hatch & the water never came in again.
