Safety of Stuyvesant Heights Block

Hello! I’m entirely new to NYC, and will be likely moving to 79 Stuyvesant Ave in Brooklyn in mid-Feb. My question: a cursory search online is turning up conflicting opinions on the safety of the area (Bed-Stuy, and Stuyvesant Heights in particular). I’m asking y’all for qualification. How safe is the area surrounding 79 Stuyvesant Ave, Brooklyn?

I live in the neighborhood. More crime now than say eight years ago, seven years ago, six years ago, five years ago, four years ago…. I’ll cut to it, local crime starting going up since Deblasio and his policies took effect. And Deblasio’s crime stats are bs.

mgbvox, Okay, take a deep breath. First of all, the comments replying to your question are atrocious. If I have to single out one that made my stomach turn, I have to say the idea that you need to love the neighborhood for ‘what it is today’, whatever that means, is a little too rigid. This is an extremely dynamic borough, in an extremely changing part of an arguably undervalued neighborhood. It’s totally okay to look to the future on your purchase (or rental as the case may be). I live near there. I don’t think it’s dangerous, I think there’s a certain laissez-faire attitude you get from people who live in the projects, so you’ll see litter and hear loud music. Par for the course in NYC. As you walk 3.5 blocks north on your 7m walk to the JMZ Myrtle-Broadway station, you’ll see a lot of young professionals. You’ll see restaurants and bars opening up within walking distance (check out Skytown for a feel of the denizens moving here, and talk to bartenders about safety), you’ll see rents exceeding what you’d think, given the comments in this thread. Let me give you an example: 1000 Broadway is a new rental where 2700-3000 is the price for 2 BR’s. This will accelerate when the L goes down for the count. People will discover that the M and J trains have been more usable all along than the L, and as people move to South WB, and then down along the JMZ, rents are going to skyrocket. Gentrification will accelerate. This sucks for some, but it means more options and arguably safety for others. As for the Roosevelt Houses, projects are projects. You have them in Dumbo, Fort Greene, Chelsea, East Village, so on and so forth. You’ll probably skip the deli directly across the street and head a couple blocks to the more salubrious offerings on Broadway. You’ll be fine. Bookmark this thread and let’s talk in a year or two.

My best advice: if you don’t love a neighborhood for what it is today, don’t move there. In my life working in affordable housing, people’s “safety concerns” are often really “fear of the other” and that makes for uncomfortable living situations for everyone involved. That being said, there is a lot to love about that neighborhood, today, as it is.

I agree with the other two. I lived down on Stuyvesant bet Halsey & Macon. The crime that makes the headlines up there though isn’t usually random.

Hello, First off, please don’t list your address! If you want to list the Ave and Cross street, that would be ok. Thats already a safely concern! That area is changing for sure, we still have the thugs running around wild around the streets. Just watch your surroundings, don’t be out too late. Keeps belongings to yourself.
