saddles for entryway
Hi: can anyone recommend someone who can do saddles for my entryway of brownstone; I believe they are made of marble. Thanks terryhopppy@gmail.com

a possible tip for the cheapies: home depot self the basic carrara marble thresholds; you can call a handyman, see if he can cut it (if it is not the standard size opening) and plop it down with your choice of adhesive or thinnest.

FYI: I am not a big fan of using construction adhesives and silicone to install saddles. they should be set on a bed of mortar not only to displace and absorb stress evenly (saddles can crack) but I get to see the rot caused when water gets trapped into spaces by silicone. I just removed a saddle last week held in by silicone and they had used it along the sides and it trapped water against the door frame causing it to rot. mortar will breath a bit more and allow the water to leave. also, the silicon fails and becomes messy. the mortar is made to last. steve

Marble Lite in Greenpoint (250 North Henry) did all of our custom made real marble saddles for the entry and elsewhere in our house when the ones from Home Depot wouldn’t quite fit correctly – we needed some 49″ x 6″ ones which isn’t a normal size as well as some other off-sizes. They were decently priced and will make them exactly to your specs. They have a website but just show up in person with your dimensions and in a couple days they will have them ready for you to pick up. To install them just glue them down with a good adhesive like pure silicone caulk or similar then caulk them in place with more waterproof silicone (clear or whatever color you want) once it cures.

we sometimes do these when we do doors and I just set one today. not my favorite thing as I hate anything with mortar. what dibs says will work, but because the threshold is usually a bit unlevel, we worry about setting stone down with just construction adhesive (PL Premium) as it may not take up the uneveness and spread the load, causing the stone to crack. we set them on thin set mortar. and we use ceasarstone as it is a bit more durable. we get our saddles from Marble Lite on Henry St but I am thinking of sourcing a new supplier (the guy who used to help me there left and he knew exactly what was needed as soon as he saw my face). if you go to them you will have to draw it with chamfers on each edge (inner edge and outer). and they guy doing the cutting will not be able to give you a price right away (the 7″ x 47″ ceasarstone I picked up today was $180). there are a couple of other places in that same area of Greenpoint. so you can check around. the prices should be close so it should come down to who can provide the best service. Any marble/granite countertop place will make these up for you. Just glue them down with some caulk-like glue. Unfortunatyely I can’t remmeber from whom I got mine but they had a showroom in the LES.
