A section of our vinyl siding on the parlor floor level seems to be failing. I can see discoloration outside and there are strange smells in the house in those areas when it rains. We’d like to replace the whole facade with wood, but can’t afford that now. Is it possible to just replace a section? It should be fairly easy to match because it’s white although it doesn’t really matter since the problem is in the back of the house. Do vinyl siding installers do these kinds of repairs? Any idea what it would cost? Thanks.

You can do this yourself: Pre college I worked for a home improvement contractor. He once told me how to replace a piece but I have never done it nor did I see him do it. if you have to change one piece, it may be simply have unhooked either by movement or by poor installation in the first place. also, if there is water getting in there, I would want to be sure that that piece of siding is the issue – and it is not coming in from above. if the piece is still attached to the pieces above and below it, you would take a drywall knife and cut down the length of it to split it in two. once done, you can tap the lower piece down and it should unlock (we used to rap the tops of them with a hammer handle to free them). it will unlock and fall down. now for the top piece. rap that up and it should unhook and move up behind the piece it is attached to. simply pull the piece above and in front of the piece you are removing away from the wall and the other will drop out. Now, about buying replacement. you will want to find out who made the original product as I am not sure if the locks/catches/channels are interchangeable. When I worked for that man, he only used one product – Alside. At that time we did not have Lowe’s and HD’s and this stuff was not marketed directly to homeowners. Anyway, if you can locate another piece like it, you can slip one back in with the factory seam behind the other piece at one of the ends (and you would cut the factory seam off the other end and set it over the adjoining seam). the trick is to leave a little play at the ends about 1/4″ at each end (the siding is made with seams that hide or prevent gaps but allow movement). any tighter and the product will not move with temperature changes and it could bulge. to install it, you will want to set the top seam at the height of the neighboring ones (I would run a chaulk line) by lifting the one above it away, put a few galvanized nails into the holes made to receive the nails. do not nail them all the way in. setting the heads a 1/4″ from the backer or wall should be fine. you want movement. Once the piece is nailed, you would catch the bottom seam of the piece above it with your finger (I also believe there is a hook type tool for this) and bend the seam down until you can push it against the seam of the new piece. once hooked, move your finger along the bottom hook and keep moving it and pushing the new old siding against the seam until you have hook the entire length. Now, you will repeat this very same process with the bottom seam of the new piece, pulling down the hook and tucking it up under the top seam of the one below. this is handyman work and until he told me that could be done, I wondered if it was a big headache to repair siding. something else you will want to be mindful of, even it seams are interchangeable, is sizing. we used to use a lot of “double 5” and single 7 (I think). you want to be sure you locate the same size product. I am a little sketchy on the sizes as I never ordered the stuff, I just put it up and did what I was told and even that was over 30 years ago. Good luck. Steve
