recommendation on a reasonable shipping service

I’ve bought lots of furniture over the years from etsy and ebay that has been shipped by greyhound. It was super economical. And the bus station that used to be on Livingston Ave. (not sure if it still is) always called when it arrived and then delivered it to wherever it was going for around $20.

Does anyone have any recommendations on a reasonable freight shipping service? I just purchased an victorian front door that weighs probably 100 lbs which I need shipped from Vermont to NYC. UPS isn’t the way to go, right? Any advice would help! Thanks!

100 pounds sounds very light for a door. There are a lot of LTL freight (“less than load) companies, and several websites that will give you quotes. I have used freightquote.com and uship.com, but they are just consolidators that farm out work. You are going to need the door crated and protected, and generally speaking it is curbside pickup and delivery. The crating may weigh as much as the door. Unless this is just a slab, it likely is too large and heavy for regular UPS service. UPS also does freight, but it too farms those tasks out. Given it is only a few hundred miles, you might do better renting a van and getting it yourself, or hiring some “man with a van” to go get it. And, in respect of the latter you probably would do better asking the seller to find someone (or find someone yourself) in Vermont to drive it here, as it likely will be much cheaper. Also, moving companies move small loads like this — the only catch is that they will bring it when they happen to have a move to or from Vermont coming in this direction.

We used Wilson Moving to transport an antique bookcase from Maine to Brooklyn. They picked it up, wrapped it, delivered it and brought it up 3 flights of stairs(!) for $300\. They do deliveries when their truck is full, so you may need to wait a week or so as they coordinate their pickups in New England. They are a transport and delivery service, not a moving company. I’d highly recommend them.
