Question about a specific block in Bedford Stuyvesant
Hello all, can any Bed Stuy locals give me their opinion on the block – Madison Street between Lewis Ave and Stuyvesant Ave. Mostly talking about safety here and safety walking to/from the subway at Fulton Street. Although any info at all on the block would be greatly appreciated.

If you are scared just carry a blade. That way if you get robbed you can stab the perp. Alternatively you can just NOT move to a neighborhood where you think you will be assaulted. I know it sounds insane, but you can just not live in Brooklyn and you will most likely be safer. Or you can petition Mayor Deblasio to destroy all the projects.

I haven’t lived on this block but have walked a few times at different times of day/night. FWIW, it looks like a nice residential stretch with mostly families. No vacants as far as I remember (the next block West on Madison seems to have a few if I’m not wrong). mopar’s right – just go and walk around, talk to the people on the block (most of them are always happy to have a conversation). I wouldn’t mind at all living there – it’s a nice block, and the walk to the A train on Stuyvesant avenue, while long, is really gorgeous with some of the best houses in the neighborhood.

It’s block by block, so unless someone on this forum has lived on that particular block, they won’t know. Your best bet is to spend a lot of time hanging out there at all hours of day and night. Speak to the neighbors.

This is not much help but you can use can use spotcrime (http://www.spotcrime.com/ny/brooklyn/bedford-stuyvesant), patch (http://bed-stuy.patch.com/police-fire) and save brooklyn (http://savebrooklynnow.blogspot.com/) to get in info on crime in the area. I’m also between stuy & lewis ave but on hancock and I don’t have any issues walking to/from the Utica A/C stop. This doesn’t mean the area is crime free.. it happens just like everywhere else in the city. E.x.: The last murder on the block I know of was almost 3 years ago (http://savebrooklynnow.blogspot.com/2009/02/murdered-on-hancock-street-81st.html). There was also a home invasion (http://bed-stuy.patch.com/articles/police-blotter-home-invasion-on-hancock-street) last year. This one tops my list –> http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/02/nyregion/saved-by-the-cops-band-nearly-loses-everything-in-bed-stuy.html?_r=1
