Plumber rec needed to install shower diverter to hand-held shower
I’ve used Petri Plumbing for my last few repairs and emergencies. They have a set price list in a giant book, so you don’t feel like the guy is just making up a number he feels like he can get away with. I think they’re a little more expensive than average, but they’re professionals and they guarantee their work.

Wall is open, our plumber recommended by someone in the neighborhood, said that installing a shower diverter to enable a hand-held shower in the wall “was not possible” !!! So I need a rec soonest – walls are open already. Thanks!

Either you and your plumber are not communicating, or you’re not working with a pro. Hire a licensed plumber. Diverters to hand-held showers for installation outside the wall are a dime a dozen, for example: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Delta-Shower-Arm-Diverter-for-Handshower-in-Chrome-U4922-PK/203124751

He’s not talking about that, ventilated. But what he is talking about is even more common. A three way diverter that gets plumbed (inside the wall with only the lever and escutcheon plate outside the finished tile) to 1\. The tub, 2\. The shower head and 3\. The hand held shower http://www.signaturehardware.com/three-way-in-wall-shower-diverter-lever-handle.html?zmam=57003275&zmac=8&zmas=1&zmap=316695&gclid=CKqJ-d7Nor8CFTJo7AodHCwAPg Just google 3 way shower diverter You would, of course need an additional water control knob for hot and cold, prividing the inflow to the 3 way diverter. Any decent plumber can do this.

Thanks, Dave. But that’s why I said he’s not working with a pro (who would be familiar with 3-way diverters). The outside-wall version was given as an option for his local yokel.

There are pretty much a billion pieces you can buy to create a diverter, or transfer, valve in the wall. The only issue is knowing what you want to look at. Trim pieces and styles are all over the map. Go to a plumbing retailer to get options and you can probably walk out of the store with something.
