Painting cornice- Oil or water based paint- NEED HELP QUICK!!!

the BM Super Spec is what we use as well and have been very happy. there are other products though and we have used stuff from PPG (Pittsburgh Paints).

My contractor is coming tomorrow and I know this is short notice but he says the color I picked in water based is better than oil based because oil based cracks more easily. I have been reading oil based takes better but am not sure what to do. I am taking his advice but would like a second opinion.

Typically you would prime with oil and then paint with either a high quality 100% acrylic or an alkyd oil based paint. The high quality acrylics today are just as good as an oil based paint.

we always try to use oil on our exterior door work. the water base paints are getting better and some contractors like them as there is less recoat time, but we still prefer oil. that said, we have recently had a customer ask for a certain water base product, which I am not naming as I think it would be overkill for a cornice, and I was very happy with the way it went on and with the result and trust it will last. I used Benjamin Moore Super Spec Alkyd Low Lustre. (oil based) Pretty darn good paint. Aesthetically I recommend not using gloss (hideous and plastic looking to me). Good luck!
