Out swing Exterior Door

We need to replace out exterior door. Is there any cons to buying an out swing door in NYC? Is there any manufacture you would recommend? Any place other than Home Depot or Lowe to buy a standard size door with a peep hole.

One disadvantage of an exterior outswing is that you can’t put a screen door on it. That’s probably only relevant, though, if you’re talking about a door to the deck or backyard.

Outswing are required in commercial for fire safety reason – so when the rush of people trying to escape a fire push against the guy in the front by the door, he can push it and it will open out as opposed to trying to explain to a mob that they must back up to be able to open the door. you can get hinges that have built in protection to prevent pin removal. some of them have a hex nut that can only be removed when the door is open. other hinges have pins inside the fold which close into hole on the frame side of the hinge – sort of like the round steel pegs on a vault or safe. There a place in Gowanus that sells windows and doors (and maybe more) where we got several nice interior and exterior doors. I think it was Dykes.

I thought if was code that all exit doors had to swing out so people could push them open in the event of some catastrophe. Maybe that’s just commercial spaces, though.

I remember reading that in the northeast, in-swings are better because you don’t get stuck inside in case of major snow fall.

Actually, an outswing door is significantly more secure. An exterior door has non-removable pins, and locking studs on the hinge that prevents the door slab from being removed unless the door is open. Also, it can provide a better weather seal because there is a jamb all around, including on the threshold. Even with a deadbolt, a wooden or fiberglass in-swing door can be kicked in with “relative” ease. That said, my apartment building front door, like many apartment buildings, is outswing. It is impractical. Much more difficult to open when you are trying to get in the door with an arm-full of items. People have a habit of pulling the door open with the key, breaking keys and locks. If you have steps in front of your door, it is doubly impractical to get out of the way of the door without falling down the steps (and may be a code issue). Finally, if you are in a high wind area, the door can go flying when it is opened.

The only cons are that they would be more easily broken into. If the hinges are standard, then the pins could be removed. Alternately, it’s more easily pried open from the lock side with no stops to prevent that but maybe it wouldn’t be an issue with proper lighting and in a safe area. Any door can be installed to swing either way. May we ask why you want this?
