Insulation: Foam vs. Traditional

My laundry room is a glorified shed with no insulation. We just had to repair the water and radiator pipes out there due to the cold. I think I can stuff insulation around the pipes effectively, and I can certainly do this in the walls and replace the dry wall. But spray insulation seems to be the latest craze on HGTV. Is it really so much better? And for a room so small (approx. 8 x 10), is it cost effective to hire someone to spray the foam in? For the ceiling, I think blowing insulation in would be the easiest. How realistic is it to use my shop vac for this in leaf blower mode?

I suspect having someone come out to spray insulation will not be cost effective. You say there’s a radiator there so yes, insulating will help a lot. A radiator is no help on these coldest of days when there’s no insulation. I would wrap the washer pipes in heat tape but you may have to shut them off when not in use during the coldest periods.

Before you go down this route, check the doors, windows, and the structure (where the walls meet the foundation, etc.) to make sure everything is sealed and air is not coming in. Otherwise insulation is a waste of time and money.

I agree with Cate, start with sealing every gap first. I did a lot of this the first year I bought the house, and was every season I kept finding more gaps I missed.

Actually, it’s looking like we’re going to go with spray foam, despite the initial upfront cost. It’ll get into those crevices you’re talking about, and it’ll last longer. Any recs or experience? I’m really wondering how much it’ll cost for approximately 200 square feet of wall, or if a company would even be willing to do something that small.

We insulated our mudroom and it did absolutely nothing because air is coming in around the door, window, and where the walls meet the foundation. It’s beyond weatherstripping. We need to replace the door, window, and at the very least re-sheath where the siding meets the cement slab, if not tear the whole thing down and start over.

If you decided to proceed with spray foam, make sure everything stored within the laundry room is either removed or fully covered and protected. The spraying process sometimes causes a mess, and any residual foam that adheres to the surface could leave a permanent mark on the items when you scrap them off. Better check for any foam that sticks to the surface immediately after the work and ask the professional to remove that with chemical cleaner within the same day. Felix
