Have found several suggestions on-line but wondering if any brownstoner’s have can recommend the best way to remove the rust. Have bought rustoleum “rusty metal primer” to use after rust removed. Assume I can use it on the non-rusted parts as well.

Basic elbow grease. Scrape, sand and tap loose paint with metal chisel until it flakes off especially on sharp edges of 90 degrees… If you use a wire brush hooked up to a drill or grinder make sure you use gloves and eye/face protection.

thanks, townie – was hoping there was something that could be applied that would reduce the amount of elbow grease needed!

Rust converter. I was amazed when I used it at work. You brush it on to rusty metal and it chemically converts and primes. It brought rusty steel frames back to life. It is not cheap. They have it at better paint stores.
