How to patch crack between extension and building?

To determine the best solution, it is necessary to determine if thee is on going settling, meaning is the crack widening? For instance, if the joint was sealed with caulk some time ago, is the gap now wider and the width of that previous caulk is now insufficient to bridge the new gap? They have cement colored caulk in the masonry aisle at home centers, and I would initially try re-sealing the gap, and monitor for more motion. The architect’s suggestion puzzles me in that is there a seam between old and new masonry? Meaning was the extension built adjacent, or tied into original and CMU’s or bricks fractured to make the gap? Expanding foam will certainly cut air infiltration, but it doesn’t seal against or hold up to rain and weather, so the outside must be caulked.

I have a large crack running from the top of the the two story extension halfway down the wall, where it meets the original building. The previous owner had patched it but now the patches are cracked and air is leaking in and making the extension colder than it already was. Its winter and its cold. Any bright ideas about short and long term fixes? Architect said remove bricks and “weave” the two buildings together. I keep thinking spray foam (not too terribly knowledgeable about this problem). Who has an opinion?
