Hot water heater

Has this thing ever been serviced? Has the anode ever been replaced? If the answer is no, then replace the boiler ASAP and in the future you need to do regular maintenance. Water heaters can last forever if you take care of them, flush out debris, and replace the anodes. If you don’t, they will rust and flood your house given the time. If the source of the rust is the water heater itself, you’re already on the edge of disaster. You don’t get rusty water with the cold?

Mine started making thumping noises last night. Did it again this a.m. & now the hot water is coming out rusty. Think I should shut it down & get a new one installed? Current one was put in in 1997\. (I know: it’s lasted a very long time.)

I have never heard them making noise, just a slow leak that turns into a bigger one. Pete needs a new one too. Maybe you could get a group discount.

I’ve already phoned him. He thinks I can just drain it but I told him I think it’s time to replace it. A O Smith, 50-gal bought from DT Plumbing in Jan of 97.

Well then try that. 17 years is a long life for a water heater. But AO Smith ones are about the best and they were probably made better in 97 than they are now.
