If you haven’t added anything much, like computers, I’d still suspect a refrigerator problem, even if it is new. Or perhaps it is that new refrigerator is just more of an a energy hog than your old one? That kill-a-watt tester sounds like a great idea, and would probably pay for itself in no time.

Our monthly bill is about $150 for our 1,800 square foot duplex. Does this seem high? We leave 10 lightbulbs on all day and four of them we leave on all night as well. We also have an alarm system, a fridge, and two computers plugged in, but no central air or air conditioning. In past rentals (just one floor) we paid about $40 a month.

our last coned bill was about $150 for the whole house, which i thought was a little high for our use. have your bills been like this every month? it might help to put appliances on power strips which you can shut off since a lot of them (TVs in particular) continue to draw current even when ‘off.’ do you have tenants? our place has been rewired so many times, who knows if the units are actually separate.

Thanks! Our bill has been the same the whole time we’ve lived here. For more than a year, our fridge door did not seal, so we thought that was the culprit. But we fixed it and our bill didn’t change a bit. We have tenants but they are on a separate electrical panel. No TV.

Sharply increased electric charges can indicate a refrigerator that needs replacing. Was warned of this when I moved to new apartment and had a Con Ed bill that was multiples of what I’d ever had before with the same stuff plugged in. You can test this out by shutting off the fridge and monitoring yor electric meter for a bit. In my case, there was water on the inside floor of the fridge that it was working overtime to deal with, but couldn’t. New fridge, and my bill returned to what it had always been. Also, while not as sharply expensive, I noticed an increase when I started leaving my computer on rather than shut it off when I wasn’t using it. Hear this is true of TVs left plugged in, but don’t have one.

Do you call your meter readings in, or does a tech come To read them? My bill is always cheaper when the tech comes. Is your basement separate? I have the same square ft you have and my bill was around $100 per month the past few months.

Thanks, everyone. Fridge is new, but maybe we’ll try turning it off — and shutting off one of the computers. We do pay for basement, but nothing is on down there — except I guess the starter for the oil boiler, triggered by the thermostat.

IF you want to go deep, invest in a kill-a-watt meter (find them on amazon for $30 or so). The idea is you plug that into the wall, then your fridge or other items into it and leave it in for a week. It’ll tell you the exact draw/usage in kWh over time and you then multiply by your electricity rate to see how much it costs to run a given device. What type of bulbs do you have on all day and night? Those might be the culprits: 10 x 100 watt bulbs equals 1kwh x 24 hours x 30 days = 720 kWh a month. At 10.8 cents a kWh that’s like 77 bucks a month alone if my math is correct. That assumes you don’t have CFLs or LEDs of course. Otherwise though, as said above older desktop PCs draw tons of power, several hundred watts, versus a laptop and modern desktops that are more efficient (and never use a screensaver–just put your pc to sleep).
