Heating Options - Direct Vent Gas Furnace?
Our co-op currently has Dynavent direct-vent gas furnaces in each unit. They are installed on the exterior walls and vent horizontally to the outside. As these heaters start to age, we are considering replacing them with Rinnai heaters. Can these be legally installed in the city? The main concern is whether a new appliance MUST vent to the the roof.

Thanks. Is that due to maintaining a minimum distances from windows, etc.?

Yes, they can be legally installed in the city. They don’t *have* to be vented to the roof, but most often that is your only legal venting option. This may be why you’ve got the legality of having one of these in the city in question.
