Gowanus Houses - Bond St.

Hello – I am guessing this is an often-discussed topic, and apologize for the repetitiveness in advance. we’re considering a place on Bond St., across from Gowanus Houses, the notorious housing projects. Having lived in a (kind of) rough neigborhood in San Francisco before we are currently on the UWS… are somewhat familiar with the feel and the issues. Question to brownstoners: How bad is Bond side of the projects, and the area around the projects in general? Can you walk home late at night from the subway or you will forever feel unsafe? Are there gunshots and sirens every night etc.? What do you think about the future and the impact on property values going forward (forever problematic? no?) Many thanks!

The precinct might be helpful, but when I talk to the police about my neighborhood (Clinton Hill) their take is very negative and not anything like my actual day to day experience.

thank you, bored at work that’s a very helpful answer @catboot – the question was about activity related to the projects. I live in manhattan now and am not concerned with city noise. I also know how gunshots followed by sirens keep you awake, and would like to avoid that.

I live on DeGraw between Smith and Hoyt, so not far from where you are considering. Things have improved dramatically from when we moved in in the early ’90s. Back then you would hear automatic weapon fire from the rooftops and hear very frequent visits from NYPD and FDNY. Back then we would rarely if ever walk on Hoyt Street i/f/o the projects. There is still a pretty active police presence patrolling there but the sound of gunshots are a thing of the past. I rarely travel on Bond north of Douglass as I have little reason to be there. Like catboot says, you need to check the area out on nights and weekends and see how it feels. Good luck.

I think a lot has to do with how you feel. Have you walked around at night, on weeknights and weekends? Do you feel unsafe? Everything else is just a matter of opinion. I don’t think there is a siren-free area in all of New York (maybe Staten Island?).

I’d be more concerned about being in a gowanus flood zone. Gowanus water in your house is not great for resale value.
