Gate on steps

I have had a fantasy involving security cameras with motion detectors and sprinklers with an automatic feature. Of course this would catch the UPS guy as well. A friend suggested I just put up the ironwork and later – when I sell the house or get ratted out to landmarks – either legitimize the gate or remove it. For a while I tried a false dog poop (this used to be a popular gag gift. I can’t figure out why). I also have tried drawing with chalk all over the stairs. Nothing works. Essentially, since I live near a bus stop, I eventually came up with these rules – a stoop sitter is only welcome if : – the person has difficulty standing or walking – they have little children with them – they are morbidly obese – they are elderly If it’s anyone else, I open the door and loudly ask if I can help them. I ask them to move when it’s obvious I can’t. I’ve thought about posting these rules on the stoop itself, in a decorative little placque. NOBODY is going to cop to morbily obese. ; )

Hello, I have a building in Clinton Hill and my is the only one on the block without a gate on the main steps. The consequence is that many people start sitting, smoking, talking, using the steps as hanging place at any time of the day/night. I would like to put a little metal fence with a gate, do I need a permit? Thanks

Yes, you’d need a permit. You’d need a property survey from a land surveying engineer to tell you where the property line is so you can get the permit, as often the existing gates are beyond the property line and are only allowed because they are grandfathered. You might also need a landmarks permit if you’re in the Clinton Hill landmark district.

Yes is landmark, also the previous owner made an easement with the brownstone building preservation, so i guess i have to contact them as well. I think will be easy to patrol the building my self….:) Thanks for your response slopette: I will put a polite sign,but i am not sure will work, my next door neighbor ad already a confrontation with local kids smoking pot at night on my stoops and call the cops, he keep me posted with the situation. I dont live there, it’s a rental and the tenant are a little scared to confront the kids.
