Garbage Cans
Last spring, I started taking a 7 mile daily walk, providing lots of time to absorb my popular Brooklyn neighborhoods and fuel a new part of an old passion. Problem solving. Park Slope has its brownstone legends. The former Gold Coast homes of Clinton Hill are majestic. Brooklyn Heights and the Promenade are stately. Bed Stuy is its history. What they all share, however, is an unruly group of off-colored plastic garbage cans, draped in plastic bags and clustered into a corner near the front entrances. I couldn’t believe those offensive objects were conscientiously placed in front of all that historically rich architecture. By foot and by bike I covered every Brooklyn neighborhood Only to discover that the problem was everywhere. I went to Amazon.com, Home Depot, Lowes, Walmart and learned that no matter how much money one wanted to spend, all you could buy was ugly. So I created Our Waste Matters ~ Cans With A Conscience. For many of us, our consciousness of the waste we create ends at the curb. Where does it go? Why should we care? Garbage cans were my gateway into a higher level of waste consciousness that I started to share through my blog ourwastematters.com. I present research, educate about waste, foster why It Does Matter, and hopefully inspire us to make waste awareness choices more important in our lives. Our planet is a small place and our Increasing Human Impact is Massive. All of this value came from a need for more beautiful garbage cans? Yes, I built a better one. One you could fall in love with, One you could be proud to place in front of your home, One that says you care about what your garbage can represents. One that doesn’t look like garbage itself. The OWM garbage can boasts user-friendly features that thoughtfully consider how to improve our waste awareness And look good doing it. Who SAYS that about a garbage can? They harmonize so completely with their setting that they blend right in. After finalizing the patents through Troutman and Sanders and working closely with an industrial engineer with plastic manufacturing experience, I am currently looking for companies/investors who develop products that inspire us to be better. Socially conscious companies who care that one Return On Investment will, yes, be profits from a garbage can…. But more importantly, the profits will be for our planet, by building a deeper understanding of our solid waste problem, by leading with creative green solutions. Cans With A Conscience can make it possible for all of us to live in a more beautiful urban landscape and bring waste awareness into our lives.

Check out http://www.metrobox.biz we purchased our two a few years ago and still look pretty spiffy, we purchased 2 of them, not cheap at $1k each but 1 is for the 2 garbage cans and 1 is for the 2 recycling cans so keeps our front stoop area looking neat and tidy. feel free tow walk past and check them out at 135 henry st

Cedar with a conscience. An alternative -to plastic with a conscience-. A well constructed and occasionally maintained cedar enclosure may have less carbon footprint but alas, wont last 800 years. My suggestion? build something unique to your available space and something that reflects your own personal garbage persona; vent that nasty cat litter odor, have a large dog? -a separate poop container all its own, like a dog house but for poop, tenants that can’t keep their shxxx in one bag? we’ll come up with somethin for em. Sorry, I couldn’t resist. This thread cracked me up. Happy trash day, Matt R www.nyc-hs.com

I looked at the website and I really couldn’t find much information about the product. Is it a fancy trash can or a nice enclosure to put your trash can in? How big is it, what does it cost? There is certainly a market for a nice enclosure if that’s what it is.

If I didn’t know this was a serious solicitation, I would think I was reading something from the Onion: “Garbage cans were my gateway into a higher level of waste consciousness” And I am with Cate on this one. Of all of the things I want to improve with my house, creating an enclosure for the garbage or improving the looks of the cans, is pretty far down on the list. I use Rubbermaid Roughnecks (grey, blue and green) and they work well and last a good, long time.

I’ve always wanted to build a wood enclosure for my garbage cans like they have in California where I grew up. It’s about 200 on my list of urgent renovation priorities.

Also noticing the can holder is made of plastic too, so more plastic to contain the plastic — sounds totally green to me!

“How many people in reality put their garbage out every day? A kitchen garbage can does not get filled or emptied every day”. Mine does, and we’re just two people and a cat. “What are you putting in your garbage in your own house that stinks so much?” Only the cat sh*t, although that’s bagged. Of course we don’t let the garbage sit around and wouldn’t want to. I suspect it’s small rental buildings, w/o cans or storage that lead to what Sanitation persists in labeling “abuse”of litter baskets, by filling them with bags of household garbage.

In my 21 foot wide mixed use brownstone, the garbage cans are in the hallway. Instead of those large round 55 gallon cans, I would love to have some low profile 55 gallon containers (rectangular)…..so there would be more room in the hallway. I currently have 8 of those large cans (4 regular garbage, 2 cans and plastics, 2 paper products) The OWM cans do look nice….but they seem like they have a low capacity ( 40 gallon?).

No, not if it is properly bagged. How many people in reality put their garbage out every day? A kitchen garbage can does not get filled or emptied every day. Most of my buildings the garbage gets picked up Monday morning, Wednesday morning and Friday morning, if tenants manage their garbage properly it does not stink. What are you putting in your garbage in your own house that stinks so much?. Garbage stinks when it is exposed to other non sealed garbage and the air.

“Keep the garbage inside. Solves the problem” Really? I’d hate to do that in my 3-story brownstone, much less a small apartment. Where would you store the garbage unless you’re in a large building with storage space. Wouldn’t the “flies,…rats and stink… to high heaven” be moved inside?

Front yard garbage cans and the additional garbage it attracts from passers by just tossing their garbage in the general direction of a can, no matter if the lid is open or closed! Has always bothered me. Which is why I train (for want of a better word) my tenants to only put out their garbage out the night before pick up days. I refuse to supply garbage cans for the outside of my buildings. For my larger buildings I have garbage cans in the utility room, because it is difficult to “train” rent stabilized tenants, then the supper puts it all out the night before pick up days. The NYC Sanitation department picks up garbage 3 days a week for heavens sake, if you cannot keep your garbage inside for what maybe 48 hours? Or more importantly be aware of the pick up days, then I do not need you as a tenant or a neighbor. If there are cans, most people I have noticed put their garbage out right after the pick up times, so it sits in the front yards attracting flies and rats and stinking to high heaven in the hot summer months till the next pick up day. If people keep it inside and only put it out the night before pick-up mornings all that mess, rats and stench etc is avoided. As well as some sanitation summonses. I was walking on a prime Fort Greene block over the weekend and saw three huge rats picking through garbage in front of fine Brownstone…. Keep the garbage inside. Solves the problem.

Oh, I see you write that your cans ARE plastic. Can you show us a picture?

A problem with garbage cans is that they tend to be destroyed by the sanitation workers. Anything made of rigid material has a much shorter life span than the ugly, but resilient, plastic cans.
