Found in our fireplace - what was this one used for ?
Or use a woodstove in the room in front of the fire place, using the existing chimney as a conduit for stove pipes.

We are trying to figure out what this fireplace was used for and if we can convert to wood burning. Behind the grate, we found what looks like a wooden vent? It has the normal marble mantel surround. Any ideas?

Most likely part of an original heating systrm that used the flues as the ducts. Never use a fireplace befoere having it checked out by a pro, especially one in an old brownstone that was most likely built for coal burning and not roaring wood fires. There are a number of fireplace guys who have been recommended here.

It is hard to tell what your situation was used for, but I can tell you that wood burning conversion is a no go. Even if your flue was adequately lined (a 1% chance), wood burning firebox is much deeper, say a minimum of 18″ behind face brick layer. That deep and you would be in your neighbor’s house. The only possible way is extending out into your room, an admitted eyesore.
