Fixing original windows in an 1876 brownstone

I have the original pane windows and need to do some repairs. Can anyone recommend someone who won’t tell me to just replace them? I need the chains repaired so that they open properly, some caulking and waterproofing on the sills. Also looking for any possible alternative for windproofing in the winter, they have storm windows now that don’t work, or don’t move up and down. I know someone who did have some plexiglass panes made that she puts on the inside, seasonally, great solution if I could find someone to do that. thanks

Met with Air Flo, hired them. Thanks for the recommendation. Restoration is $1800 cheaper than replacement.

replace. You can make it look just the same. There is no reason to be nostalgic when it comes to windows. Single pane windows should be illegal. Check out my building compared to the neighbors. Heating bills are half, for the next 30 years.

Check out Indow Windows. I just posted about them again here, in this thread: [http://brownstoner.staging.wpengine.com/forums/topic/triple-pane-window-sound-insulating-from-passing-helcopters/#post-183827](http://brownstoner.staging.wpengine.com/forums/topic/triple-pane-window-sound-insulating-from-passing-helcopters/#post-183827) For under $3k we eliminated the drafts and noise coming through our 30yr old landmarked, 4×8 wooden-framed, single-pane windows. They look great (pretty much invisible) and we can easily pop them in and out when we want to open a window on a nice spring day. Best investment we ever made in our 17 years of co-op ownership.

Keeping the old windows is really the way to go. I wish we still had ours.

Try AirFlo Window Contracting Corp. 194 Concord Street Brooklyn, NY 11201 Phone (718) 875-8600 These guys know what they are doing with old windows. Most contractors who say they can repair old sash windows have no clue what they are doing with old houses. Doesn’t sound like you need to replace them if you just need new chains and some putty. most old sash windows can be repaired and insulated without using plexi or foam. The original weights are probably still in the frames too. I have an old brownstone too with lots of original sash windows, each of them needed some repair and tlc. Good luck!
