extra keys

I’ve been at the same apartment for the past 3 years and the landlord, who lives downstairs, refuses to provide extra keys (the key to the main building cannot be duplicated since it’s a Medeco). Two sets were issued to the two occupants. My partner and I will be hiring a nanny to take care of his daughter after school for a few hours each day, and she will definitely need her own keys. Is there any way to get the landlord to work with us on this?

Many locksmiths will make a copy of the square Medeco keys, stamped “do not duplicate” and that require a card, for $20-25, no questions asked. Just ask at a few locksmiths, or google for sites where people with the same dilemma list hardware stores where they had keys made. I had one made by walking into a random locksmith shop in Westchester county recently. As for the landlord living downstairs, you can either say you are passing off the key between the nanny and you, or feign ignorance of the “do not duplicate” thing if caught – it is really stupid anyway, people need multiple keys for a variety of reasons.

Explain your dilemma to your LL and ask them what would make them comfortable. An introduction to the nanny? An extra deposit plus the cost of cutting new keys? An additional written agreement? Would a partial set of keys give the nanny access, yet still maintain building security? Does your LL live on premises? Most LLs, especially after 3 years tenancy, will work with you as long as you show you appreciate and share their concern for security.

Is the landlord, or a member of his family, around during the day? If so he might be more amenable to providing an extra key after having the nanny ring the doorbell to be let in a few times. Otherwise, is there anyone you know who is around during the day (perhaps a retired neighbor, or a nearby store owner) with whom you could leave one of your keys?

You can have the round medeco keys copied. You need the card for the squarish key.
