Electrician Review
This is more of a summary than a review. I hired Campbell Electric, http://www.campbellelectricservice.com/, to do a number of jobs around my townhouse. I bought a ceiling fan and GFI switch myself, and for $1000 all other parts and labor I got: 1- Installation of said fan. Looks good and works. 2- Removal of a switch to a bathroom fan that vents into the attic; replaced with plate; vent still exists in ceiling with no power. I was hoping the fan cover could have been replaced with a large plate so steam doesn’t creep into my attic, but he said no such thing exists. Otherwise, works and looks good. 3- Replacement of GFI switch. Works and looks good. 4- Repair of the outlet above our microwave that had previously been installed by someone who was drunk, stupid, lazy, psychotic, or some combination thereof. Works and looks good (I no longer fear electrocution when I reach up into that cabinet). 5- Installation of a quad outlet with two 20 amp lines coming from the main circuit breaker. This required some work on the breaker and about 60 feet of wiring from the front to the back of my house. All wiring is attached securely to joists/beams in the basement, and the outlet looks good with no mess. 6- Did NOT replace cheap thermostat with programmable one. The original bill was for $1100, but he took $100 off for not doing this. He said he didn’t realize it would mean reconfiguring the boiler to accommodate. I wish he had been more knowledgeable of boilers when he gave the estimate. It was the electrician with him who explained it was a bigger job than anticipated. I think I got an OK deal. Two other email/phone bids came in at 50% to 80% higher. Also, I originally wanted two wall outlets fixed on top of everything else. When the guy came by for the estimate, the issues were so small (and embarrassingly simple), he fixed them free of charge. Finally, I’ll add that there was no mess. Nothing required removal of drywall. Still, they laid down cloth under the fan and picked up the crumbs where they had been working. On the downside, I wish the bill would have been itemized. This made negotiating the lack of thermostat out of the total about five minutes more problematic than it needed to be. Bottom line, I’ll go with these guys in the future for repairs/renovations of this nature.
