door to transom proportions
Hello, We are about to order a set of double entry doors for our townhouse. We are having a difficult time figuring out a good height to transom proportion. The rough opening is 101 feet high and 57 feet wide. We were initially thinking of going with an all wood panel door that is 90 feet high with a transom that is about 11 feet high. We are now thinking that the door may be too high and looking into reducing the height of the door to about 85 inches and increasing the height of the transom to about 16 inches. I am looking to get readers’ thoughts on what a good door to transom ratio is given the rough opening we have. Thanks in advance. Sam

80″, 84″, and 96″ are standard heights. Standard transom heights are 12″, 16″, 20″, and 24″. But keep it mind, you need to add the frame, plus 2 inches to the door height, and roughly plus 4 inches to the transom. So taking that into a account, you’re options are a 84″ inch door with a 12″ transom. Or simply do 96″ doors. I’d go with the latter option personally, cause it just provides more of a wow factor vs a piece of 12 inch glass on top. Now, regarding the width, each door will end up being 28 inches wide. Some people don’t mind that, others find it too narrow and annoying to have to open up the 2nd door to bring in something larger or just more comfortably in the house. So, they do a 36 inch door (or wider), with sidelights on each side. Not historically accurate, but more comfortable for sure. Goodluck! oh and as for warranty, up to 96″ you won’t have any issues, past 96 is when they say it won’t come with a warranty. But i’ve seen 10 foot tall doors made by reputable companies with no problems down the road.

Thanks, Steve. I think we are going to go with 84″ or something very close to it. 90″ just seems to tall of a door and i think some manufacturers refuse to give a warranty for doors taller than 84″ b/c the taller the door the greater the chance of warping? Thanks again.

84″ was one of the std door heights and many of the doors in frames with transoms did come in at 84″. if you are working with 101″, I would say the 84″ door is safe. some manufacturers still consider 84″ a stock item but is was more prevalent in years past. Steve
