I really like the block I am going to be living on which is greene ave in bed stuy. It is very uniform row housing of brownstones but it just seems that people have all different types of gates in the front of their house which some are really rusty and beat up and some have bars on the windows, other do not, etc. I am just wondering if anyone has any experience with setting up a small HOA or something along those lines. I think it would bring the block together and make our town look better and drive values up even. I am not sure if this is even something that can occur but thought id ask if anyone knows anything about it. Anyone?

Hey. I’m on Greene Ave too, between Throop and Tompkins. I talked to some of the old timers. There used to be an HOA but it is no longer active. Message me. Maybe we can do something about it. I’ve been trying to make the block more beautiful. After 6 months of calling, I was approved for a new tree planted right in front of my house.

It’s pretty easy to start a block association. Find an issue that folks might be interested in. Our block came together when we entered “The Greenest Block in Brooklyn” contest. We all kind of helped each other with cleaning the street, planting, watering, etc.

this has to be one of the most ridiculous posts i’ve seen on brownstoner in a while. i’d like to see what your place looks like so i can critique your decisions. i can’t imagine many others on the block will see eye to eye with you. they probably like their white vinyl windows or the odd color paint they have on the facade. if you don’t like it, pay up and live off PPW.

I think some of you guys are quick to judge and are taking this the wrong way. When the persons gates to the right of u are literally rusting out of the ground and half missing and the guy next to you doesn’t have gates at all, it would be great to see if everyone wants to come together and make the block look better. I am not asking people to have their house all the same, that is ridiculous. but it would be nice to have something in common such as gates or something so it gives somewhat of a uniform look to the block. If you don’t agree, you don’t have to say “this has to be one of the most ridiculous posts you have seen in a while” no permits. With that being said, thanks to everyone who had something positive to say.

Oh, dear. This wreaks of why Brooklyn is losing what makes it special to begin with. Make a block association to look after the elderly on the block, or to plan block parties or something. But to force (even in a friendly way) people to keep their property up to your specifications? Move to a planned community. Do you think that “the guy” living next to you (in Brooklyn, we call that person a “neighbor” btw) doesn’t know his gate is rusting? That he’s just waiting for some newcomer to show him the way to cookie-cutter glory? Maybe he isn’t interested, doesn’t have the money, or has other priorities. For goodness’ sake, you haven’t even moved in yet and have already identified what you want to change about SOMEONE ELSE’S BLOCK.

curiosity, i understand 100% what u r saying but again, why you are coming off in such a way when you can just say these things in a nice way and not so condescendingly? Yes i know what a neighbor is and was just trying to make a point. Do you know what manners are? And yes I thought that the “guy” next to me might not have the money, doesnt care or has other priorities. But who are you to say that is definitely the case. Maybe he was thinking about doing it and was just pushing it off and maybe i am the push in the direction he was waiting for? I am only looking to strengthen my neighborhood and you have no idea what my motives are. Believe it or not, i was almost certain, the guy who had the rusty gate didn’t have alot of money and already thought of actually going to put together a fund ( starting with my own money) to raise funds for people who wanted to do little things like this but couldnt afford to. I am in real estate and mortgages and am more fortunate than some others financially and wanted to help. I have a bunch of great ideas and am very eager to move into my new home and come together as a community and help each other out. And you obviously see i am a newcomer to the neighborhood and might not understand everything so why not give me ideas and be positive rather than critique everything i am asking or saying and put me down.

You are right, skeer. I was more nasty than was necessary and I am sorry for that. I applaud your efforts to make your block nicer, and appreciate that you are asking for input. We always haze the newbies–human nature. And aren’t you glad that you got to hone your message with a bunch of strangers instead of pissing off your new neighbors?? My honest advice is don’t try to do anything that looks or sounds formal or forceful (like a HOA) for at least 6-12 months. Get to know your neighbors and your neighborhood. Have them over for coffee or a bbq. Say good morning when you pass them on the street. Fix up the outside of your house, which will make conversations happen naturally when your neighbors pass by as you are working. It will be a LONG time before your neighbors stop thinking of you as the new guy. But they will pretty quickly decide if you are the “nice new guy” or the “d-bag new guy.” Good luck.
