ConEd meter readings

I talked to Coned about this last night and the customer service rep suggested calling in the reading rather than sending it electronically if we wanted them to rely on it.

I’m never home to let the meter reader in. They keep sending me letters about it. Has anyone come up with a good solution to keep them off my back?

If you call in the readings, they will probably require about once every year or two, that you set up a specific time for them to personally read the meter to confirm the reading. You can also pay for them to install a meter viewer outside that the reader can see without coming into the house. They may also have a radio meter that will allow a reader in a passing van to get the reading. National Grid has this available, so I assume that Con Ed does too, if you are willing to pay for the installation.

I am dealing with the same situation. Regarding automated readings like NYDEC for water and National Grid for gas, no, Con Ed does not have this yet for the masses. They are slowly instituting it and have only begun with those who qualify as a medical necessity. Con Ed readings are taken on the 28th of each month, if you open an on-line account with Con Ed you can submit your readings through your account. I recently set this up because I kept getting “estimated” reads which have piled up and I am now paying off with a payment plan. Like you, I was never around when they claimed to have tried to access my home. The account route is very easy and I confirmed that it worked the first time by following up with a phone call and they had in fact received my submission. You can also post a photo of your meter reading outside your door, or upload that photo through your Con Ed account. They hope to have the automated reading capabilities “soon” but offered no timeline. Hope this helps.

ConEd is the absolute worst! They insist on ringing the bell for the garden apartment, even though I left notes for them to ring bell on top of the stoop. We ended up with about 12 months of estimated charges, for which we overpaid by $1,300 (later credited to our account, or as I like to call it, our interest-free loan to ConEd). Calling in the readings, or submitting via the website is the way to go.

I called ConEd recently about this. You can send them a photo of your meter to a specific email adress.
