Does anyone have any recs for folks who do this type of work? Advice? I’m looking to take out a small garden area (it’s home to stray cats) and remove all the paver stones so that everything is concrete. Many thanks in advance.

Is that even legal anymore? You might want to check the new regulations designed to promote green yards (good for the environment and helps with run-off).

My understanding is that in residential neighborhoods, the percentage of planted area requirement for front yards varies with the width of your lot. So if your house has 20 feet of frontage or less, you need to allow for 20% of the front yard to be planted; 20-34 feet, 25% needs to be planted; 35-39 feet, 30%; 60 feet or more: 50%. One way to make it less cat friendly is to plant aromatics (lavender, thyme, rosemary, oregano, catmint) and/or use pea gravel as mulch. Most of these plants like sunny locations. If you have a shady yard, good plant choices are heucheras, blue spruce sedum, and tiarella. They don’t need much care, and if you overplant a bit and put pea gravel, your yard won’t be so attractive as a litter box.

We’re planning to put planters in afterwards. Seems a bit excessive that there is a rule mandating gardens in the front yard. We’re located in bed-stuy, brooklyn if that matters.

It’s part of a Master Plan to handle storm runoffs. The city is also mandating larger tree wells, for the same reason. Right now, every time it rains hard, the sewer system dumps all the street runoffs directly into the ocean, which is less than ideal.

Try Shamin Ahamed: (347) 219-7909\. Or, s.ahamed29@yahoo.com. He’s done several masonry and hardscaping jobs for us and understands drainage issues. Good guy. He’s laid back but knows his stuff. Tell him Roz recommended him.
