Ceiling leaking!
Last night during the rain, water started leaking through one of the light fixtures in the kitchen (photos attached). I turned off all the electricity in the kitchen. I went downstairs and water was also leaking through the ceiling in the bedroom, directly below the kitchen- water drops instead of the steady stream I was seeing in the kitchen. There is no leakage on the floors above the kitchen. Any idea on what’s causing the leak? Leaking pipes? Roof? The plumber is coming today but just wanted to get a head start on possible causes.

Oh, do you actually have to replace the gutter? I was just thinking it was blocked up (with leaves, actually, because that’s what happened to us but now of course I realize duh ice and snow not leaves) and needed to be cleaned out. Also, are you sure your ceilings/floors are perfectly level? It would be normal for them to be a bit slanted and for the water to run downhill until, whoosh, light fixture!

Thanks everyone! I’m going to get the gutter replaced and the brick sealed. Unfortunately, the two companies that came recommended are busy until the end of the month. I guess, I’m not the only one in Brooklyn having this issue.

@bedstuyreno it traveled to the light fixture because that is likely the closest opening. not a surprise at all. is the gutter in good shape? you may not need to replace it – just need to keep it clear. others on here have used deicing cables.

I had a few people come over today and it looks like it’s the gutter. Opened the ceiling and no leaks. But what we can’t figure out is how the water traveled to the light fixture- it’s about 8 feet from the wall. Also, does anyone know how much a new gutter including labor would costs

i just had this last night too! roof penetration was not flashed properly. problem was that the slush was built-up about an inch near the penetration, and there is a small hole in the tar that otherwise might not have leaked (because it was an inch above the roofbed) but since the wall of slush was so high it was basically just standing water near that hole. I was lucky because my A/C vent in the ceiling was leaking and i just took out the entire vent and with a flashlight i could see that it was only a few feet away. If that vent had not been there, and was not dripping, the water would likely have traveled a ways until it found a low spot – and chances of me finding it would have been quite a headache (and a crapshoot for roofer). Anyhoo, i’m guessing that you need a roofer and looking at things like penetrations, as well as gutter ice dam etc. An experienced person who knows where a usual suspect might be found.

Yeah, check the gutters. We had a massive flood once in the rear of a second floor apartment (building was three stories) because of some leaves in a gutter.

Check your radiators, including valves. If your building has brick in back and brownstone in front, and the rooms with leaks are closer to back, check that your gutters are not clogged or frozen, causing water to flow down the brickface and migrate through mortar that needs pointing.

Hard to know without seeing the house. Need to see how everything lines up. This winter has been brutal on roofs, exterior walls, and plumbing. With as much as you’ve told us, it could be anything. Get someone handy and start poking around, cut some holes in the ceiling and get in there with a flashlight and see what the path of the water is.

probably from the roof since it was noticed during the rain and it stopped coming down once the rain stopped. However, I would still check to make sure that its not from above by running all the water in the apartment above to make sure no water is coming down in your place. just because the apartment above does not have water coming out, does not rule out a roof issue.
