Build I Green/Lowe's Parking Lot

Thanks rh. I understand moving around the city and parking is stressful and slow for everyybody with cargo. But, residential home improvement workers and contractors are not counted in transportation modeling because the data is mixed with new construction workers, the regulator is not the DOB. The DCA says they licensed only 1,400 contractors, but does not say how many are working without licenses. We have over 3,000,000 housing units, so it is not plausible for each Home Improvement Contractor to serve over 2,000 homes. I imagine the DCA has failed to license more than 95 % of us. The NYS Dept of Labor told me “everyone in your industry is cheating” (on payroll taxes). With few exceptions, we can believe them. The DOT has no data, but seems to regard Home Improvement Contractors as only those with commercial vans, only the larger firms, a small minority.

Wanted to perform a small public service and let people who are driving down to shop at build it green not to park in the lowe’s parking lot as they’re running an ‘aggressive tow’ campaign. We got towed when the parking lot was half full and three of the four of us were just getting over the flu. It took 2.5 hours and $136 to get our car back. The tow truck driver that took me back to the lot to get the car straight up said Lowe’s is definitely involved/benefitting from this operation, but the Lowes managers vehemently deny it. Who the hell knows who’s telling the truth, but don’t get victimized.

That sucks but for future reference, there is parking behind Build it Green specifically designated for their customers. You turn just before the canal and drive all the way around to the back where they have a second entrance.

I made the same mistake once. Its not likely Lowes is benefiting in any way. The tow guys are a couple of thugs. I parked, walked out toward Build it green, turned and stopped briefly at the open place under the bridge, wasn’t away from the car for more than 5 minutes. Looked over and saw my car hitched up. Ran over and caught it, the guy wouldn’t release it without my giving him 65 bucks cash. He said he saw me get out of my car and walk toward BIG rather than Lowes, that was all he needed to see to hitch up the car. Manager inside knew nothing about it. I called corporate in Atlanta, escalated to executive support, whatever that is, same guys are still sitting like vultures in the far corner of the lot. They are supposed to give a grace period of 15 minutes. Crooked greedy thugs do not have grace periods in there vocabulary. Lowes is not likely benefiting but they don’t care either.

Sure, BIG has parking, but the small full-service hardware stores and specialized suppliers have less of it. No wonder Lowe’s and HD put so many local businesses out of business. It is the same at my house and your’s. If you want to replace something and toss the old thing away, there are many delivery and pick up services, but the little guy using a personal vehicle to carry heavy things has no parking. The one who restores, reuses, and reinstalls can’t afford commercial insurance on a van. The green service provider takes cash, and is not a store front or a manufacturer, and is not included in the political discussion about small businesses. The people we want most to deposit and withdraw from BIG, are not even counted in the transportation policy modeling of our city. The service businesses are the majority of small businesses. We won’t fully integrate the goals of BIG, as long as parking and transportation priorities remain so favorable to personal transportation and big retail, and against small businesses. Of course, I am happy about the increased retail parking with muni-meters and I gladly pay for brief trips to hardware stores, but I risk being fined or towed every time I carry heavy things to and from my client’s house. Unless the house has a driveway, its easier and cheaper to dump than reuse.

BIG has parking in the back, but of course everyone parks in Lowes for Vaccaro’s. Where else would you park? Interesting rant, Greenmountain. I’m looking for a space to open a salvage shop and as a frequent buyer, I know that parking is not to be underestimated! It’s tough to find a desirable location to get foot traffic plus be out of the way enough to have the parking spaces. Within budget, of course. That being said, some of these cash guys deliver for an extra fee. I know that Eddie Hibbert does. And of course, any reseller should be happy enough to remove the items as long as it’s not total garbage.
