Brownstoner meetup?

As the title says- have folks on these forums ever done any sort of formalized meetup? I posted my email address on here a few times and have had more than a handful of people email me looking for advice on all kinds of things renovation-related. When my husband and I first started our project, we were those people emailing random folks from blogs and websites looking for not only general guidance, but also some sort of a support system for the insanity that is home renovation in Brooklyn. These boards are incredibly helpful, but sometimes I think it would be nice to just have someone to shoot the “stuff” with about these projects, as well as share ideas/references/experiences. Would anyone here be interested in a meetup? I would be happy to organize a happy-hour or some such thing. Mods- please let me know if this is somehow against the rules or delete at will!

Jim, several architects attended the first gathering back in 2008, as did a licensed plumber (lively conversation with Master Plvmber about “Joe the [unlicensed] Plumber” from the McCain campaign), a few folks who work for developers, some active preservationists, home owners, renters, a few in the design biz, etc. It was a very friendly, social gathering.

I’d be curious about the group’s reaction to an architect attending a meetup. We’re often assumed to be no more than trolls just here looking for work, and I could see this being a point in that case. I’ve seen the original posts for meetups years ago and stayed away for this very reason. I won’t deny that this site has provided us with clients, but I will say that that was purely incidental. I started paying attention to the forum over ten years ago because we had a job or two renovating brownstones and a friend told me to check out this site. I did, and found it to be an incredible source of information and discussion. As time went by and I found that I could answer questions posted here, I did. I try to be as specific and factual as possible in my responses, and I like to think that I contribute to this community as much I get out of it. I would understand entirely if attendance of meetups by service professionals would be frowned upon. An informal, friendly get together could easily turn into a networking/sales event. Either way, it’s food for thought, and it might make sense to clarify the intent of such a happening.

@daveinbedstuy that’s kind of what I envision- I’ve been very active in other forums for many years (actually met my now-husband at my first IRL meetup from a local forum 7 years ago!) and have always found it a great way to make friends you wouldn’t ordinarily make. The added bonus of everyone on this site is that we all share a common (expensive, crippling, masochistic) interest in bk real estate/renovation, which is something most of our other friends have little interest in. It’s quiet around here this weekend but I’ll monitor this thread for a few days and, if some interest arises, will post something next week with a day/time/location suggestion.

A few of us met up in 2008 or 2009 and have been doing so since then. This all came about when Brownstoner used to have an Open Thread but, alas, that is long gone, like many things here. They were really more social gatherings though. Many of us have developed strong friendships and the meetups were sometimes not without drama, intrigue and, well, use your imagination. Alcohol was always involved.
