Hello My plumber is installing a Burnham gas/steam boiler and venting it through the chimney. There is an existing opening for side wall venting (had an oil boiler before that’s been taken out). Since I want to remove one of the old non-functioning fireplaces and the chimney runs through it, can this new boiler be vented through the side wall? Are there pros and cons to side wall wall vs. chimney venting? Thanks for your advice!

For sidewall venting you would need power vented Burnham Independence steam boiler. PVNI series. There are strict regulations for sidewall venting thou. DOB filing must describe the way boiler is vented, and if certain conditions are not met engineer must be hired to prepare plans and applications for DOB.

Yes what Gennady said. You can vent just any boiler. It doesn’t work and it’s a major Code violation that can get you in trouble.

Each boiler has very specific requirements for venting, and side wall venting is possible only for power vented units as gennady pointed out. Even then the distances from windows, ground ,lot line are highly specific to each boiler. Look at the Installation and operation manual for your specific boiler and there will be a section describing approved venting conditions. Also note that engineers are now required to attest to the fitness of the existing chimney as well
