Australian Family on Holiday in Bed-Stuy

Hello My wife and I and our 3 children (9, 11 & 15) will be in Bed-Stuy for a week in mid September as part of a 4 week trip to the US. We don’t want to only visit Manhattan but to enjoy all that Bed-Stuy has to offer as well (food, sports, family/community events). We like walking and chatting with people and eating at regular food places. I would like to take the kids to local sports (we are NFL/MLB fans), libraries, malls etc. Any suggestions from locals?
