Lately, I examined a few ceramic, encaustic tiles from different manufacturers. (Like from England, not cement tile from Morocco.) I have had some new inquiries about vestibule reproductions and it would be nice if porosity were closer to 0\. I especially want to avoid stains and dirt rubbing in to lighter colors. I applied penetrant thoroughly. Red wine (among other things) still stains if allowed to remain overnight. Some stains can be lifted out with a paint stripper poultice, and encaustic tile can be re polished with diamond abrasives, but it may not reflect light exactly as the original surface. I have observed the same stains in historic tile, but without modern penetrates, and accumulated over a century. Yet, American Encaustic Tile, long gone, still looks great on many NYC floors. Exceptionally stain resistant tile is available from American Restoration Tile. I have been waiting, for quotes from Mr. Byrd for over a week – not as long as some people wait for quotes from me, sorry – but has anybody else had long delays from those folks? How about delivery of product? I really admire what they do. Green Mountain’s “Barrier Free Shower” photo on houzz.com was added to 10,000 idea books as of last Tuesday.

I was not aware American Restoration Tile makes cement or encaustic tiles. But you could try Craven Dunnill Jackfield Ltd. in England for that. They’ve been making them since 1872\. When I dealt with ART, they gave me a quote immediately and said their lead time was five to eight weeks, I think. I never ended up actually ordering from them. That was in 2007.

ART does not make cement tile, which is also porous, and I haven’t tested the CDJ product, yet. Check the ART catalog pages 32-36\. Encaustic is pigmented throughout, so all of ART is encaustic. I hope they are ready to take my order next week.
