Adding a large skylight: do I need to file/ do I need an architect

For a skylight of that size, you’ll need an architect to file plans with the city. If you don’t file, you will have significant legal exposure. Even if you’re averse to filing(even though it’s no big deal and only takes a few weeks), you’ll want an architect to supervise the design and construction.

Hello: I want to add a large skylight to the top of my third floor space (not stairwell). Is this something that a contractor can do w/o permits or will it require drawings, filing, and engineer etc? From my understanding one is limited to 5 sf unless there is a high curb. Does anyone know of other restrictions in building code. I was hoping to add a 32sf gabled skylight but not sure it can be done legally. Any one with relevant experience with a similar project?

hmmm non architect second opinion? we were thinking of doing this as well but a few thousand to file plans on something that will only cost a few thousand…..seems excessive. thoughts?
