Thinking about purchasing a home in Sunset Park. What do people think about living there?

  1. Gogirl, with regards to Gowanus, I wouldn’t want to live anywhere near a Superfund site, no matter how trendy it is. See also: Greenpoint. No thanks. Sunset Park has a lot of leftover industrial factory spaces near 2nd and 3rd Aves, but no Superfund sites there that I know of.

  2. Zoned schools not great, to the best of my knowledge. The neighborhood is witin District 15, which affords some other options. Professional famliies I know with kids in public school are at PS 10 or the Children’s School.

  4. i work in Sunset park, 45th and 2nd…the walk up to 4th is fine, a steep hill but doable, I feel completely safe, there are tons of places to get lunch. The deli on 4th and 44th have the best sandwiches in the whole entire world, the place is jam packed everyday with lines out the door…..All the Police and firemen go there….
The area is bustling with people and have never had a problem. It is primaraly a hispanic area, but none the less other nationalities as well.

Everybody here are just going about their daily lives and are livng…so yes yes the neighborhood is alive, and safe.

  5. 47 5/6 is a beautiful block.

50th 4/5 and 55th 4/5 are also some of my favs in the neighborhood.

  6. One of the best brownstone blocks in this area is 47th Street between 5 & 6 ave. You can still get a 2-3 family for $750- 850K. There are a few available at this time. I’m not a broker, just interested in having more family owned buildings on the block.

  7. I’ve always thought about moving to Sunset Park, too — some of the homes and blocks are beautiful (and affordable!).

Can any of you residents talk about schools? How are the elementary schools?

    Thanks!

  8. Does anyone know about the elementary and middle schools in the neighborhood?
