I just discovered that I have a bedbug problem in my apartment. I don’t think it’s an infestation at this point but I know I can’t leave it up to my own efforts. And needless to say I had a difficult time sleeping last night. I’ve also heard about stories of unscrupulous extermination companies so I thought to ask if anyone could recommend an exterminator?

  1. I am taking precautions. I’m sure someone else’s carelessness may be how I got them in the first place!

I’m having an exterminator come by at the end of the week but two people informed me that the owner is responsible for the extermination. Is this true? It’s a brownstone of course and not under Section 8 nor a subsidized rental/rent control. And if the owner is not responsible, are they at least responsible to exterminate the other two floors in the brownstone?

  2. Freezing doesn’t work.

    Heating works but is expensive.

    Chemicals work but are chemicals.

Google “Boot A Pest”. He’s your man.

ps if you have a bug you have an infestation. Please take precautions not to spread to the rest of the world while you decide.

  3. Stern Environment Services use freezing machine. So very little chemicals involved. Several people from this side mentioned their services. I would suggest call the guys and do what they say and watch what he does. Next time you will have the problem – you will know what to do.

  4. check out diatemeceous earth to create a physical perimeter (or several), and steaming is also supposed to work very well on furniture.

aside from health issues of chemical poisons, many bedbugs are growing resistant to chemicals.

Diatemeceous earth is physical killer–small spiky fossils cut the bugs’ skeletons and they die. It also it works on ALL bugs which is a nice bonus. Certainly it has eliminated the silverfish problem in our building.

  5. after hiring some company and wasting few k, i brought some chemicals online and done the job myself. but hire some dogs to sniff where they are and nuke the whole place just to be on the safe side.

you should do the bagging and drying of the clothes etc… before the chemicals. and after many sprays to make sure they are gone. do it for like at least 4 months. spray every 2 weeks.
