I want to replace the existing doors on some kitchen cabinets (which are actually in the bathroom) and add some doors to cabinets which do not currently have doors. Any recommendations for the best way to do this to get matching veneer for the sides and the front side of the boxes so that they match the doors? any advice appreciated

  1. sshs,

The infomercial guys show that they panel the cabinet fronts, but you are asking the wrong questions.

In an attempt to utilize something you have, you are unaware that nice cabinets that you pick out are not that expensive, and will be much more satisfying in the long run.

Finish carpentry like we do is time consuming and therefore expensive. Cabinets are made on jigs in factories in low wage cost geographical sites.

The alternative that you appear to be seeking, is how can I save $$ by re-cycling fixtures you already own, possibly with local materials and commonly available craftsmanship.

The answer is commonly available craftsmanship is “challenged” at best. You are more likely to find competent local talent that can hang new cabinets, as it is a more common job.

  2. lowender — thanks for question. I don;t know, they were here when I moved in. They looks as if they are homemade actually but are in good condition

  3. thnks brucef — I know that the panels will work for the sides, but what about the front of the cabinet that you can see behind the doors? Even if I get doors that are flush with the exisitng boxes, I think you can still see the fronts, right?

  4. Well, I see no one has answered, so fools rush in, where wise men etc.

If you can find door designs you like from KraftMaid, they will sell doors.

They also sell matching “panels”, that are pre-finished in all the different styles. These trim panels come in various sizes all the way to 96″, which might work if you could get all you needed from one piece.

Can you tell what manufacturer your existing cabinets are made by? Getting doors from them will be the correct size, in terms of hardware placement.

If it was a job I was considering, i would probably get new cabinets, ordered all plywood.

The time it would take me to do a good job is way more expensive than new cabinets.

Be extremely careful if you were considering a cabinet refacer contractor, like you see in the advertisements.
