dear all….

Is this a termite? Please say no. And if it’s a yes, recommendations for mitigating the problem?

Thanks very much

  1. Not a good enough photo to ID this insect. If, as it appears, the antenna has an elbow rather than being straight, then it is not a termite. You can contact the NY Entomological Society through the American Museum of Natural History for more info: nyes@amnh.org

  2. Call an exterminator. Not a huge franchise, but a local, reputable one such as Ed of Empire Pest. They charged me $130 for a treatment, and so far the termites have not come back.

  3. A termite has two body segments, a flying ant has 3. A little tough to tell from the picture – but either way this is the time of year when the winged drones hatch out and fly to establish new nests (of both species). The ants live in the ground, probably in the foundation or below, and if you find where they are emerging from you can spritz the hole with some insecticide and the problem should be just this season. If it’s a termite, they behave the same way but reside in wood. Still not a huge deal, but get in a contract with an exterminator (we use advanced pest management) who will inspect, and set bait stations for preventative maintenance. For $200 a year they will keep the termites away – because every spring the termites do this and float all over the neighborhood looking for a new home – and by the time you see them, they’ve already done their damage.
