Has anyone had any experience building their own in-wall bookcases? I’ve search the web and found very dinky looking ones. I want one that will be able to support a library ladder.

  1. using 3/4″ thick ply is only part of the solution. there is a lot more to this; look at my website, all of the bookcases are built out of cases made out of 3/4″ ply, stacked and placed sid-by-side, so in essnece 1.5″ thick, with solid wood stiles and rails on the front make the entire thing look like one unit; these can support a ladder. There is a company in lower Man that makes the ladders, may be putnam mentioned above.

There is a lot written on how to do this and if you are good, you do not even need a table saw. Some other pro level tools would help though. I tend to tell people a lot on here, but I can’t give all my secrets away.

  2. Use ply shelving that’s at least 3/4′ thick and google “putnam rolling ladder”.
