We have a small 2nd bedroom in which we’d like to install a closet/desk combo. The wall is approximately 8 feet wide with a window in the center. Our plan is that closets would go on either side of the window (to the ceiling– about 9 feet), and a desk top would be installed beneath the window.

We’d like the closets to be solid wood with some decorative trim (molding) to match the feel of the apartment. Has anyone done something similar and is willing to share the cost?

Also, any other ideas for closet/desk combos welcome!

  1. you should contact justin at figured customs. i had him make me two 3’x 8’tall closets i think it cost around 2000. they were painted white and had shelving. he met me at my house and had a design i liked in about 10min. very professional. I am very happy with both pieces.

  2. These cabinets should be made out of plywood with solid rails on the front. There is really no reason for solid wood sides at this point and if one looks at all of the older solid wood cabinets, they have split decades ago. I know that an above poster suggested building walls for the sides and using wood on the front, that is ok, but you will be trying to squeeze a lot into an 8′ run – the cabinets and a desk in the middle – so building walls will only take up needed storage space. Sometimes stiffness (the lack thereof) with the plywood becomes a problem, especially if the height is high and weight will be placed up top; we can overcome that with a piece of channel steel secured inside (less cumbersome than wood).

Pricing varies. As house o’ wax said, stain grade is more than paint grade. I can’t say that it is really that much more on a small job like this. Moldings around the top are usually par for the course to conceal the gap between the uppermost part of the cabinets and the ceiling.

I am hesitant to discuss pricing here.

  3. Hello … while I didn’t have a similar project constructed to yours, I did have two woodworking projects that needed to be built. One was bathroom vanities for three porcelain wall-mounted sinks and the second was a built-in shelf for my stereo/video components.

I used The Tinker’s Wagon (www.thetinkerswagon.com) for both jobs.

Steve is a great guy, very meticulous and fair-priced. My vanities project was very complex due to the already installed sinks; but with my plans and basic designs, Steve was able to give me an estimate over the phone. Once he came by and measured everything and finished the project, his estimate was spot on and that’s what he charged me.

I think you will be very pleased with Steve’s work and his professional work ethic. Good luck.
