  1. thanks all. yes had someone come take a look. He said can’t pull up one board and replace. He could tell by just looking what was water damage, there might be some installation issues but hard to tell without making a financial and time commitment to redoing most of, if not all, the floors. UGH….

    thanks again fellow brownstoners

  2. Gretschgirl,

If the floor that you want pulled up for inspection, then put back down, is conventional tongue and groove hard wood flooring, this is usually impossible to accomplish.

The physical arrangement of the tongues etc is designed to allow “blind” nailing, where the heads of the special barbed flooring nails are concealed by the next groove.

So there are two direct problems with extracting a moddle board. First the head of the nails are not accessible. Second, the newer barbed nails, or older cut nails are to some degree headless, and designed to not be removeable, similar to a fish hook (for explanation purposes only).

In the instance you require, we normally rip with a circular saw down the middle of a strip, a couple of times. Then we collapse that strip into itself, prying out the pieces.

If that gained you enough access to view beneath, we trim the bottom half of the groove off a replacement piece, and glue and face nail with finishing nails.

  3. We move in a brownstone and had a lot of repairs including the wooden floor. Carlos was able to open up and looked at what is underneath and put back a new wooden floor for our kitchen. He did a wonderful job. You can call him and have him come to take a look.
